1. Open TMPGEnc and click start new project - ![]()
2. Click add file and browse for your video file - ![]()
3. If the source aspect ratio is 16:9, you must manually set this - ![]()
4. If you don't wish to encode the entire avi, click the Cut-edit button and set a start and end point - ![]()
5. Click Filters button, you may want to hide a few pixel at top and bottom with a black mask, this is handy for hiding time code and analogue head switch points - ![]()
7. Now load the default DVD template, set your TV standard, Constant or Variable Bitrate and Dolby Digital audio and then click Select - ![]()
8. Set Constant Bitrate to 7800 kb/s if disk space permits and set the dolby digital audio bitrate to 256 kb/s -
You can also use single pass variable bitrate or multi pass variable bitrate, be sure to never set a minimum below 2000 kb/s - ![]()
9. Now unlock all the extra settings that advanced users may change such as Closing the GOP and GOP structure etc. -

10. Set output to Elementary streams and select a suitable encoding quality, I mostly use Standard (fast, 35min encoding time of a 1 hour source based on Dual Xeon 3gig processors) or High (a bit slower, 55min for a 1 hour source file) ![]()
11. Now save your settings so they will be available as a custom template next time you need to do the same ![]()
12. Click Encode and then Start, or register in Batch in case you want to encode multiple files in one hit -
